State Assessments

Each year, COA Middle School students participate in California state assessments to help measure academic progress. All students take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition, 8th-grade students take the California Science Test (CAST). Students enrolled in the English Learner (EL) program also take the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC), which measures progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.

After testing is complete, the state provides families with a Student Score Report (SSR) for each student. This report shows your student’s overall performance in each subject area, along with more detailed results by learning domain. State assessment results are one of several tools used to understand student learning and can be considered alongside report card grades, classroom work, and teacher observations to provide a well-rounded picture of your student’s progress. These results can help identify areas of strength as well as areas where additional support may be helpful.

To learn more about your student’s scores, visit the Starting Smarter website at https://www.ca.startingsmarter.org/. The site includes explanations of test results, sample test questions, free learning resources, and tools to help families prepare for parent-teacher conferences.

COA Middle School families can access their student’s score report through the Aeries Parent Portal. If you need help logging into your parent portal account, please contact the school office.
